Having studied BA (Hons) in Multi-disciplinary Design, Karen worked in Interior Design and Photography. Returning home to Devon, she now spends her time sewing in her loft studio near Lydford on the edge of Dartmoor.
Inspired by photographs of her Whippets, she investigated ways to combine the elegance of the images with the texture and warmth of fabric and the stitched line. She is now creating free-hand machine-embroidered and appliquéd pictures of dogs and other animals. Drawing with the sewing machine, and with constant reference to the photograph, she endeavours to bring out the character of the creatures she portrays, often including imagery, such as plant forms and furnishings, to set the context for the particular subject.
